04 — Pre-Med Journey

The tools I wish someone had handed me.

A mentorship hub for pre-med students: personal story, hard-earned lessons, and practical resources.

The journey

Where it started

The Spark

My journey began not in a classroom, but in the waiting rooms of community clinics where I watched people navigate a system that wasn't built for them. That disconnect between need and access ignited a fire that has only grown stronger.

Finding My Path

Choosing to pursue both an MPH after a Biology & Neuroscience degree wasn't the conventional route, but convention was never the point. I wanted to understand health at every level: from cellular biology to community infrastructure, from drug intervention to social policy.

Faith, Discipline, and Purpose

My faith is not separate from my medicine. It is the foundation of it. It teaches me that every patient carries inherent dignity, that service is the highest calling, and that discipline in preparation is a form of respect for those I will one day serve.

Advice

For fellow students

  1. 01

Start with your 'why' and return to it often. The journey is long and your purpose must be strong enough to sustain you.

  2. 02

Seek experiences that stretch you beyond your comfort zone. Volunteer, shadow, research, not for your CV, but for your formation.

  3. 03

Build genuine relationships with mentors who see you as a whole person, not just an applicant.

  4. 04

Take care of your mental health. The culture of sacrifice in pre-med is real, but burnout serves no one.

  5. 05

Let your unique background be your strength. Medicine needs diverse perspectives now more than ever.

Go deeper

The curriculum beyond the classroom.

Failure is Formation

Every bad exam score, every rejection letter, they weren't walls, they were redirections. The path to medicine doesn't reward perfection; it rewards persistence.

Community Over Competition

The pre-med culture can be cutthroat. I learned early that lifting others doesn't lower you. Study groups, shared notes, honest conversations, that's how we all rise.

Your Timeline is Yours

Comparing your chapter 3 to someone else's chapter 12 is a recipe for misery. Trust the process. Trust your process.
